چکیده
In 1980 Furchgott and Zawadzki discovered that acetylcholine-induced relaxation of rabbit aortic strips required an intact endothelium. They found that stimulation of muscarinic receptors on the endothelium led to the release of a non-prostanoid relaxing factor which they named endothelium-derived relaxing factor. Further studies have established the importance of endothelium-derived relaxing factor in human coronary arteries.

Vascular actions of nitric oxide as affected by exposure to alcohol.
Vasodilator substances liberated from endothelial cells, mainly nitric oxide (NO), play important roles in physiologically regulating blood flow and blood pressure and preventing pathological vascular damage. Impairment of these actions promotes the genesis of cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, cerebral and cardiac hypoperfusion, impaired vasodilatation and atherosclerosis. Low conce...

Tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) functions as a cofactor for several important enzyme systems, and considerable evidence implicates BH4 as a key regulator of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) in the setting of cardiovascular health and disease. BH4 bioavailability is determined by a balance of enzymatic de novo synthesis and recycling, versus degradation in the setting of oxidative stress. Augm...
متن کاملNitric oxide synthase in atherosclerosis and vascular injury: insights from experimental gene therapy.
Gene therapy aims to intervene in a disease process by transfer and expression of specific genes in a target tissue or organ. Cardiovascular gene therapy in humans remains in its infancy, but in the last decade, experimental gene transfer has emerged as a powerful biological tool to investigate the function of specific genes in vascular disease pathobiology. Nitric oxide synthases, the enzymes ...

متن کاملChanges in plasma nitric oxide metabolites concentration during glucose tolerance test in type 2 diabetic rats
Introduction: Repeated hyperglycemia play an important role in the development of atherosclerosis in diabetic patients. Endothelium is the organ of the first-line defense against atherosclerosis and nitric oxide has a major role in this task. The aim of this study was to determine changes in plasma nitric oxide metabolites concentration during glucose tolerance test in type 2 diabetic rats. Me...
